It combines pump electricity and heater fuel. The pump alone can run a few hundred dollars a year, more for a single-speed unit on long hours. Heating adds anywhere from modest to over a thousand dollars depending on climate, fuel, and cover use. The calculator totals both and shows the split.
In pools that are heated much, the heater usually dominates the energy bill. In mild climates with little heating, the pump is the largest consumer — often the second-biggest electricity user in the whole home after air conditioning. Knowing the split tells you where savings matter most.
On the pump side, switch to a variable-speed model and run it fewer hours at lower speed. On the heating side, use a cover to slash evaporative loss, lower the set temperature a couple of degrees, and choose an efficient heater. Together these can cut a pool's annual energy cost substantially.
Multiply the pump's horsepower by 0.746 to get kilowatts, then by daily run hours and 365 days for annual kilowatt-hours, then by your electricity rate. A 1.5 HP pump running 8 hours a day at 14 cents costs around 450 dollars a year at full speed — far less on a variable-speed setting.
Usually not — most pools heat only during a swimming season of several months, which is why the calculator asks for heating months separately. The pump, by contrast, typically runs year-round (though fewer hours off-season), so its cost is annualized while heating is seasonal.
