Why it matters
Waterline tile takes the scale line and sunscreen scum — it must be cleanable and frost-proof.
Smaller mosaic tiles look great but mean far more pieces and grout to set.

Multiply the pool perimeter by the tile band height in feet to get square footage, then add a waste allowance for the many cuts at corners and steps. A 96-foot perimeter with a 6-inch band needs about 48 square feet before waste, or roughly 55 with a 15 percent allowance.
It depends on tile size: a square foot holds 144 one-inch tiles, 36 two-inch, 9 four-inch, or 4 six-inch. Multiply your waste-adjusted square footage by the tiles-per-square-foot for your size. Smaller mosaics mean many more pieces — and more grout and labor — than larger tiles.
Only pool-rated, frost-proof tile — usually glazed porcelain, glass, or stone designed for constant water exposure and freeze-thaw cycles. Ordinary wall tile absorbs water and fails. The waterline band must resist the calcium scale line and sunscreen scum, and be smooth enough to scrub clean.
Typically six inches, centered on the water level so it covers the zone where scale and oils accumulate. Some designs go taller for a bolder look or to reach steps and benches. The band height directly drives the square footage, so confirm it before ordering.
About 15 percent for waterline tile, more than for flat surfaces, because the band has frequent cuts at corners, steps, returns, and skimmers. It's also wise to buy a few extra boxes beyond that for future repairs, since tile lines and colors are often discontinued and hard to match later.
