A winter shock to raise free chlorine to about 10 ppm, a winterizing dose of algaecide (roughly one quart per 10,000 gallons), a stain preventer if you have metals, and balancing chemicals to bring pH, alkalinity, and calcium into range first. A slow-release chlorine float helps maintain a residual through winter.
Balance first — adjust pH to 7.2 to 7.6, alkalinity to 80 to 120, and calcium to around 175 to 225 ppm. Then shock to about 10 ppm free chlorine. Finally, once the shock level has dropped a bit, add the winterizing algaecide. Adding algaecide into very high chlorine degrades it, so sequence matters.
A winterizing dose is stronger than summer maintenance — roughly one quart per 10,000 gallons of a long-lasting formula. For a 15,000-gallon pool that's about 1.5 quarts. It's added after the shock has come down so the chlorine doesn't break it down before it can protect the water over winter.
In hard-freeze climates, yes — after blowing out the plumbing you add non-toxic propylene-glycol pool antifreeze to the lines to prevent any residual water from freezing and cracking pipes. In mild climates that don't freeze, antifreeze isn't needed, but blowing out and plugging lines is still good practice.
Water sits untouched for months, so any imbalance has all winter to cause damage — corrosive water etches surfaces, scaling water deposits, and poor sanitation breeds algae. Balancing pH, alkalinity, and calcium and shocking before you close means the pool stays protected and opens clear and easy in spring.
