It depends on how the pool wintered. A clean, covered pool needs balancing chemicals and a shock to about 10 ppm. A slightly green pool needs a stronger shock to around 20 ppm. A green or black-algae pool needs a full SLAM. In all cases you balance pH, alkalinity, and calcium first.
Don't just dump in shock — run a SLAM. Balance the water, then raise free chlorine to your CYA-based SLAM target and hold it, brushing daily, until the algae clears and the pool passes the overnight chlorine loss test. Opening green takes days of maintained high chlorine, not a single dose.
Balance first — pH, alkalinity, and calcium into range — then shock to the level your pool's condition calls for, and finally add algaecide once the chlorine has come down. This is the same balance-then-shock-then-algaecide sequence used at closing, and it prevents wasting chemicals or degrading the algaecide.
Yes if you can — knowing pH, alkalinity, calcium, cyanuric acid, and chlorine lets you dose precisely. If you can't test right away, start with a standard opening kit (shock, algaecide, balancers) and test as soon as the water clears enough for accurate readings, then fine-tune from there.
Follow the same balance-then-shock sequence, and additionally check the salt level and bring it to your generator's target — typically 2,700 to 3,400 ppm — as part of opening. Don't run the salt cell until the salt has dissolved and the water is balanced, and verify cyanuric acid for UV protection.
