What is the ideal bromine level?

Pools run best at 2–4 ppm bromine; spas and hot tubs want a higher 3–5 ppm because hot, heavily-used water has a bigger sanitizer demand. Test frequently in spas — the small water volume and high temperature mean levels swing fast.

Is bromine better than chlorine for a hot tub?

For most hot tubs, yes. Bromine stays stable and effective in hot water, tolerates a wider pH range, and produces less odor than chlorine. Its main weakness — no UV protection — doesn't matter for a covered indoor spa.

How does a bromine system work?

You build a 'bromide bank' of sodium bromide in the water, then add an oxidizer like shock to convert it to active bromine. As bromine sanitizes it reverts to bromide, which the next oxidizer dose reactivates — so the bank is reused rather than consumed all at once.

Why can't bromine be used in sunny pools?

There is no stabilizer for bromine equivalent to cyanuric acid for chlorine, so direct sunlight destroys it rapidly. In an open outdoor pool you'd burn through bromine constantly. It's best reserved for covered spas and indoor pools.

Can I switch from chlorine to bromine?

Yes, but you can't easily switch back without draining, because residual bromide in the water keeps converting any chlorine you add into bromine. Most people switch to bromine for a spa and stay with it for that water's life.
