Pools run best at 2–4 ppm bromine; spas and hot tubs want a higher 3–5 ppm because hot, heavily-used water has a bigger sanitizer demand. Test frequently in spas — the small water volume and high temperature mean levels swing fast.
For most hot tubs, yes. Bromine stays stable and effective in hot water, tolerates a wider pH range, and produces less odor than chlorine. Its main weakness — no UV protection — doesn't matter for a covered indoor spa.
You build a 'bromide bank' of sodium bromide in the water, then add an oxidizer like shock to convert it to active bromine. As bromine sanitizes it reverts to bromide, which the next oxidizer dose reactivates — so the bank is reused rather than consumed all at once.
