Enough to achieve at least one to two turnovers, and generally no less than eight hours a day. The exact figure depends on your pump's flow and pool volume. A pool that turns over in four hours needs about eight hours for two turnovers; slower flow needs more time.
Usually not necessary for a residential pool — eight to twelve hours typically delivers adequate turnover. Running continuously wastes energy unless you have a variable-speed pump dialed to a low, efficient speed, in which case long run times actually improve filtration at minimal cost.
Run during the day if you rely on a salt chlorine generator or want to skim debris while people are around. Run at night to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates and to circulate after the day's bather load. Splitting the time across both is a good compromise.
