Multiply the weir width by the GPM-per-foot for your desired look: about 50 GPM per foot for a thin sheet, 100 for a moderate curtain, and 150 for a heavy cascade. A 3-foot moderate-curtain waterfall needs roughly 300 GPM — typically requiring a dedicated water-feature pump.
The weir is the lip or edge the water spills over, and its width is how wide that sheet of falling water is. Flow scales directly with weir width — a wider waterfall of the same style needs proportionally more GPM. It's the key dimension for sizing the feature pump.
Usually yes for anything beyond a gentle trickle. Substantial waterfalls demand high flow that would compromise filtration if drawn from the main pump, so a dedicated feature pump on its own circuit is standard. A small thin-sheet effect can sometimes run off a spare return, but bold features need their own pump.
It depends on the effect you want. A delicate, translucent sheet appears around 50 GPM per foot; a fuller, opaque curtain around 100; and a dramatic, loud cascade around 150 or more. Choosing the style first, then sizing the pump to that GPM-per-foot, gives the look you're after.
The vertical height the water must be lifted is head the pump has to overcome, on top of pipe friction. A taller waterfall needs a pump that delivers the required GPM at that greater head, so always include the height when sizing. Reading the pump curve at the total head ensures the flow you expect.
