A turnover is the time it takes your pump and filter to circulate a volume of water equal to the entire pool once. Residential pools generally aim for one to two turnovers per day; busy commercial pools need three or four to meet health codes.
No. Beyond your plumbing's safe velocity, higher flow just creates noise, friction, and wasted electricity without better filtration. In fact, slower flow over longer hours gives the filter more contact time and cleaner water. Size flow to your turnover goal, not the maximum the pump can push.
Match the required GPM against pump performance at your system's total dynamic head. Roughly, 40 GPM suits a ½ HP pump, 60 GPM a 1 HP, and 80 GPM a 1.5 HP at typical residential head. Always check the specific pump's flow curve at your head value.
