Divide your pump's flow rate in GPM by 15, the maximum safe flow per square foot of sand bed, to get the minimum filter area. Then choose the next standard tank size up. Sizing this way ensures the water moves slowly enough through the sand to filter properly rather than channeling through.
Practically, no — a larger-than-needed sand filter is fine and even beneficial. It runs longer between backwashes, handles flow with margin, and lasts longer. The only downsides are slightly higher cost and footprint. Undersizing, by contrast, causes poor filtration and frequent backwashing.
It depends on tank size: an 18-inch tank takes about 100 pounds, a 24-inch about 200, and a 30-inch about 300 pounds. Always fill to the manufacturer's line — too little sand lets water bypass, too much can reach the valve. The calculator gives the amount for your recommended size.
Sand filters capture particles down to roughly 20 to 40 microns, which is coarser than cartridge (10–20) or DE (3–5) filters. That's adequate for most residential pools, especially with good chemistry. For crystal clarity or very fine debris, a DE or cartridge filter does better.
Every five to seven years for typical residential use. Over time the sharp grains that trap dirt wear round and smooth, so filtration quality declines and backwashing gets less effective. If clarity drops despite proper backwashing and balanced water, aging sand is a likely cause.
