Decide how much of the pool stays flat and shallow — say 60 percent of the length — then the remaining run drops from the shallow depth to the deep depth. The slope grade is the depth change divided by that sloping run length, which you can express as a ratio like one foot of drop per four feet of run.
A gradual slope is safer and more comfortable. Many residential pools use roughly a one-in-three to one-in-seven grade in the transition zone. Public pools often have code limits on how steep the floor can be in shallow areas to prevent swimmers from unexpectedly losing their footing. Always check local requirements.
For a diving board, the deep end typically must be around nine feet or more, with a specified depth envelope extending out from the board, per safety standards. Never install a diving board on a pool that doesn't meet the minimum diving depth — it's a serious injury risk and usually a code violation.
It expresses steepness as one unit of vertical drop per so many units of horizontal run — for example, one-to-four means the floor drops one foot for every four feet of length. A smaller second number is steeper. Expressing slope as a ratio makes it easy to communicate to builders and compare against code limits.
