Take the total surface area — the floor plus the walls — and multiply by the shell thickness in feet to get cubic feet, then convert to cubic yards. A typical 32-by-16-foot pool with a 6-inch shell needs roughly 14 to 16 cubic yards before adding a waste allowance.
Six inches is common for residential gunite shells, increasing to eight or more in expansive soils, for deep ends, or where engineering calls for it. Thicker shells cost more concrete and steel but resist cracking and movement better. Always follow the structural engineer's specification for your site.
Both are sprayed concrete for pool shells. Gunite is a dry mix combined with water at the nozzle; shotcrete is pre-mixed wet and pumped. They yield similar finished shells and the volume math is identical — the choice is largely about crew preference, equipment, and how the mix is delivered.
Concrete weighs roughly two tons per cubic yard, so a 15-cubic-yard shell weighs around 30 tons. That's separate from the water load. Knowing the shell weight matters for soil bearing and for confirming the site and access can handle the equipment and material.
Real shells aren't perfectly uniform — thickness varies as crews shoot curves and benches, and some material rebounds or is trimmed. Adding about 10 percent ensures you don't run short mid-pour, which is critical because the shell should be shot continuously for a strong, watertight result.
