Size the collector area as a percentage of your pool's surface: about 60 percent in hot sunny climates, 85 percent in moderate ones, and up to 110 percent where it's cool and cloudy. Divide that area by the standard 48-square-foot panel size to get the panel count, rounded up.
Roughly the same as the collector area you calculate — often half to all of your pool's surface area. For a 500-square-foot pool in a moderate climate, that's around 425 square feet of south-facing roof, or about nine standard panels. Make sure the roof orientation and pitch suit solar gain.
Yes, very well in suitable climates — it can extend the swimming season by two to several months at almost no running cost. Its limitation is that it only heats when the sun is out, so it warms more slowly than gas and benefits greatly from being paired with a cover to retain that heat.
As close to true south as possible in the northern hemisphere (true north in the southern), to capture the most sun through the day. East or west orientations still work but collect less, so you'd add panels to compensate. Shading from trees or structures should be avoided.
Over time, far cheaper to operate — sunlight is free, so running costs are essentially just the pump energy to push water through the panels. The upfront installation costs more than a gas heater, but with no fuel bills it typically pays back within a handful of seasons in sunny regions.
