Find the water surface area by shape, multiply by the average water depth and the fill fraction, then by 7.48 to get gallons. Because spas seldom fill to the brim and have molded seats, applying a fill percentage — often around 90 percent — gives a more realistic figure than the raw box dimensions.
Spas hold a few hundred gallons, so chemical doses are tiny — fractions of an ounce. A volume error that would be trivial in a pool becomes large in proportion for a spa, throwing sanitizer and balance well off. Getting the gallons right is the foundation of safe, comfortable spa water.
Most residential hot tubs hold between 300 and 500 gallons, with larger swim spas far more. A common 7-by-7-foot square hot tub at about 3 feet of water and 90 percent fill holds roughly 990 gallons; smaller round tubs hold a few hundred. Always calculate yours rather than guessing.
Yes. Molded seats, loungers, and contoured footwells displace water, so the actual volume is less than a plain length-by-width-by-depth box would suggest. The fill-percentage input helps account for this, and many manufacturers publish a rated volume you can use as a cross-check.
Roughly every three months for typical use, or sooner if total dissolved solids climb well above your fill water or the water becomes hard to balance. The small volume and high bather-to-water ratio mean spa water saturates with dissolved solids far faster than a pool, so regular fresh refills are normal.
