How many lifeguards do I need?

Divide your active bather count by the ratio for your standard and age group, rounding up. Under the common YMCA standard, that's one guard per 25 adults, per 20 in mixed-age use, or per 10 for youth under 12. So 100 youth swimmers need at least 10 guards, plus supervisors above that.

What is the standard lifeguard-to-swimmer ratio?

It varies by standard and age group. YMCA uses roughly one guard per 25 adults, one per 20 mixed, and one per 10 youth. Red Cross uses similar figures. MAHC frames it around zones of surveillance each guard can effectively watch. Always apply the strictest applicable rule for your facility.

Do children require more lifeguards?

Yes. Youth under 12 and learn-to-swim programs require much tighter ratios — commonly one guard per 10 swimmers — because young and inexperienced swimmers are at far higher drowning risk and need closer, more constant supervision. The calculator applies the tighter ratio automatically when you select these groups.

How does water clarity affect lifeguard staffing?

A lifeguard must be able to see the bottom of their zone to spot a swimmer in distress. If the water is turbid, each guard's effective surveillance zone shrinks, so you need more guards to cover the same pool, or you must improve clarity before opening. Poor visibility is a serious safety and liability issue.

How many supervisors do lifeguards need?

A common rule is one head guard or supervisor per five lifeguards on duty, to coordinate rotations, manage breaks, and maintain accountability. Larger facilities layer supervision further. The supervisor count is in addition to the guards directly watching the water, not a substitute for them.
