How long does it take to heat a pool?

Divide the total BTU needed (volume times 8.34 times the temperature rise) by your heater's effective BTU per hour. A 150,000 BTU gas heater warming a 15,000-gallon pool by 10 degrees takes roughly ten hours; a heat pump of the same nominal output takes much longer because of lower delivered heat.

Why does a heat pump take so long to heat a pool?

Heat pumps deliver far fewer BTU per hour than gas heaters — they're efficient but slow, moving heat rather than burning fuel. Where a large gas heater might warm a pool in hours, a heat pump can take a full day or more for the same rise, which is why it's run continuously and paired with a cover.

Should I add a buffer to heat-up time?

Yes. The basic formula assumes no heat escapes during heating, but a real pool loses heat to evaporation and air the whole time. Adding about 15 percent gives a realistic estimate. A cover dramatically reduces that loss, so covered pools track close to the no-loss calculation.

Does pool size affect heating time?

Strongly. Heat-up time is directly proportional to volume, so a 30,000-gallon pool takes twice as long as a 15,000-gallon pool to achieve the same rise with the same heater. That's why larger pools either accept slower heating or invest in a higher-BTU heater.

Is it cheaper to keep a pool warm or reheat it?

For frequent use, holding temperature with a cover is usually cheaper than letting the pool cool and reheating from cold, because you avoid the large energy spike of a big temperature rise. For infrequent use, letting it cool and heating before swims can save more — a cover helps either way.
