Why it matters
Algaecide is a backup to chlorine, not a replacement — chlorine does the real sanitizing.
Polyquat (poly-60) won't foam or stain; cheaper poly-30 can foam at treatment doses.

Common questions
No. Algaecide is a preventive backup that stops algae from establishing, but chlorine is your primary sanitizer. A pool with no chlorine will eventually grow algae no matter how much algaecide you add. Use them together, not one instead of the other.
Polyquat (polyquaternium, often sold as poly-60) is the best all-round choice — it doesn't foam, doesn't stain, and is compatible with all surfaces. Copper algaecides are effective and longer-lasting but carry a staining and hair-tinting risk if overdosed.
Add a maintenance dose weekly during swim season, and after every shock treatment once the chlorine has come back down. The post-shock window is ideal because high chlorine breaks down many algaecides before they can work.
Cheaper poly-30 algaecides foam, especially at treatment doses or with aeration features running. Switch to poly-60, which is concentrated and non-foaming, or reduce the dose. Persistent foam can also indicate over-dosing.
Algaecide alone won't clear an established green pool — that needs a chlorine SLAM. Use a treatment-strength algaecide dose as a follow-up after the water clears to prevent regrowth, not as the primary cure.
