Sketch the pool to scale on grid paper, then count the squares the water surface covers — each square represents a known area. Alternatively, divide the pool into simple shapes (rectangles, circles, triangles), calculate each area with standard formulas, and add them together.
Truly irregular pools don't fit any single geometric formula, so the most reliable approach is to measure the surface area once — by plan, grid, or app — then multiply by average depth. This separates the hard part (the shape) from the easy part (the depth).
It's only as accurate as your surface-area figure. A plan-derived area is very accurate; a hand-gridded estimate is usually within 5–10%. The depth and conversion steps add almost no error, so focus your effort on measuring the surface area well.
Yes. Freeform, lagoon, and natural-edge pools all work with this method. Trace or grid the water surface to get the area, use the average of your shallow and deep depths, and the calculator handles the rest.
Take depth readings at several points and average them, weighting toward the larger areas. If one zone is much deeper, you can also split the pool into zones, calculate each separately, and sum the volumes for a more precise total.
