Because spas hold only a few hundred gallons, doses come out in teaspoons or fractions of an ounce. Add gradually with the jets on, then re-test after the water circulates.
Free chlorine or bromine of 3 to 5 ppm, pH of 7.2 to 7.6, total alkalinity of 80 to 120 ppm, and calcium hardness of 150 to 250 ppm. These ranges keep the hot water sanitized and comfortable and protect the equipment. Spas drift faster than pools, so test before each use.
A spa holds a fraction of a pool's volume — often 300 to 500 gallons versus 15,000 or more — so the same ppm change needs a proportionally tiny amount of chemical. Doses are measured in teaspoons or small fractions of an ounce, which is why a measuring spoon and gradual addition are essential to avoid overshooting.
Bromine is often preferred for spas because it stays effective in hot water, tolerates the pH swings spas are prone to, and produces less odor. Chlorine works too and acts faster, but gasses off quickly at spa temperatures. Many spa owners choose bromine for its stability in hot, frequently-used water.
