Common questions
Multiply the number of jets by the flow per jet. Typical deck jets run 3 to 8 GPM each, so four jets at 5 GPM use 20 GPM total. Add about 10 percent margin when sizing the feed pump so the jets reach their full arc even with minor losses.
Arc distance grows with flow per jet — roughly 4 feet at 3 GPM, 6 feet at 5 GPM, and 9 feet at 8 GPM, with a 45-degree nozzle giving the longest reach. Aim them so the stream lands in the water, accounting for the launch height above the surface.
About 45 degrees gives the maximum arc distance, the same principle as projectile motion. Steeper angles send the water higher but not as far; shallower angles keep it low and short. Most installations use around 45 degrees and then fine-tune the aim so streams land cleanly in the pool.
Size it to the total GPM of all jets plus about a 10 percent margin, at the head of the feed plumbing. Four 5-GPM jets need a pump comfortably delivering 22 GPM. Often deck jets run off a dedicated line or a shared feature circuit rather than the main filtration pump.
Two-inch pipe handles up to roughly 40 GPM of deck jets at a reasonable velocity, which covers most residential arrays. For larger installations, step up the pipe size to keep velocity in the safe range and avoid starving the jets at the far end of the run.
