Why it matters
Lowering pH with acid also lowers total alkalinity — check TA after big pH drops.

Common questions
The ideal range is 7.2 to 7.6, with 7.4 a common target. In this band chlorine works efficiently, water feels comfortable, and surfaces and equipment aren't damaged. Below 7.0 the water turns corrosive; above 7.8 chlorine loses effectiveness and scaling risk rises.
Acid lowers pH — muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) or dry acid (sodium bisulfate). Both also reduce total alkalinity, so if you're lowering pH a lot, expect to re-balance TA afterward. Add acid slowly to the deep end with the pump on.
Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is the standard pH raiser and moves pH up with little effect on alkalinity. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) raises alkalinity more than pH, so use soda ash when pH is the main problem.
New plaster, aeration features, and saltwater chlorine generators all push pH upward. Salt pools are especially prone to pH drift because the cell process is alkaline. Regular small acid additions are normal maintenance for these pools.
Roughly 8 fl oz of 31% muriatic acid per 10,000 gallons lowers pH about 0.1 unit. The calculator scales this to your exact pool size and the size of the change you need.
That's a 0.6 drop. In 15,000 gallons with 31% muriatic acid, that's roughly 72 fl oz (about 0.56 gallon), added in stages.
Partly. Aerating the water off-gasses carbon dioxide and slowly raises pH, but to lower pH you generally need acid. Reducing aeration features helps slow the rise.
Yes, strongly. At pH 7.0 chlorine is far more active than at 8.0. Keeping pH near 7.4 ensures your free chlorine actually sanitizes.
