How much coping does my pool need?

Coping runs around the entire pool edge, so start with the perimeter — for a rectangle that's twice the length plus width. Multiply by the coping width in feet for square footage, and add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage. A typical 32-by-16 pool has a 96-foot perimeter needing about 106 square feet of 12-inch coping with waste.

What is pool coping?

Coping is the capped edge that sits on top of the pool shell wall, bridging the shell and the surrounding deck. It protects the shell edge, channels splash water away, and gives swimmers a comfortable, slip-resistant surface to grip and climb out on. It comes in stone, travertine, brick, and cast concrete.

How do I calculate coping for a round pool?

Use the circumference — pi times the diameter — as the perimeter, then multiply by coping width and add waste. Round and curved pools waste a bit more material than straight runs because pre-cut pieces must follow the curve, so a slightly higher waste percentage is prudent.

What material is best for pool coping?

Travertine, especially bullnose, is popular because it stays cool underfoot and resists slipping; natural stone and brick offer durability and a classic look; cast concrete is the most economical.
