Raise: Dose = (CH change ÷ 10) × (Volume ÷ 10,000) × 20 oz calcium chloride

There's no chemical that lowers CH — only partial draining and refilling with softer water reduces it.

What does calcium hardness affect in a pool?

Calcium hardness controls whether water is corrosive or scaling. Too low and the water dissolves calcium from plaster, grout, and metal. Too high and calcium precipitates as scale on surfaces and equipment. It's also one of the inputs to the LSI balance index.

How do I raise calcium hardness?

Add calcium chloride. About 1.25 lbs per 10,000 gallons raises CH roughly 10 ppm. Dissolve it in a bucket of water first — it gives off heat — then pour the solution around the pool with the pump running.

How do I lower calcium hardness?

There's no chemical that removes calcium. The only practical method is to drain part of the pool and refill with water that has lower hardness. The calculator shows what percentage to swap to hit your target.

What calcium hardness should plaster pools have?

Plaster and concrete pools should run 200–400 ppm. The higher calcium protects the cement-based surface from being etched by aggressive water. Run toward the upper half of that range in soft-water areas.

Does calcium hardness change on its own?

It creeps up slowly as water evaporates and leaves minerals behind, and as cal-hypo chlorine adds calcium. It rarely drops unless you dilute with softer water, so high CH is usually managed by partial draining.

How much calcium chloride to raise hardness 50 ppm?

About 6.25 lbs per 10,000 gallons. For a 15,000-gallon pool, that's roughly 9.4 lbs to raise CH by 50 ppm.

Can you lower calcium hardness with chemicals?

No. Only diluting the pool with lower-hardness water reduces calcium hardness. Sequestrants can mask scaling temporarily but don't remove calcium.

What happens if calcium hardness is too low?

Aggressive, calcium-hungry water etches plaster, erodes grout, and corrodes metal fittings. Raising CH into range protects the pool surface.
