Add the floor area to the wall area. The floor is length times width; the walls are the perimeter times the average depth. The sum is the interior surface area to plaster. Add about 10 percent for overage, since plaster is applied in one continuous job and you don't want to run short.
It depends on the finish and water care. Standard white plaster lasts roughly 10 years, quartz finishes around 15, and pebble finishes 20 years or more. The single biggest factor in plaster longevity is keeping the water chemically balanced — aggressive water etches and shortens the life of any finish.
White plaster is the classic, economical finish but the shortest-lived. Quartz adds crushed quartz for durability and color. Pebble finishes embed small stones for the longest life and a textured, natural look. Glass bead gives a shimmering, premium appearance. Cost rises with durability and aesthetics.
When the surface becomes rough underfoot, heavily stained, hollow-sounding (delaminating), or starts to leak through cracks and craze lines. Rough plaster also harbors algae and is hard to keep clean. The interval depends on finish type and water balance, ranging from about 10 years for white to 20-plus for pebble.
Enormously. Aggressive, low-LSI water dissolves calcium out of the plaster, etching and roughening it; scaling water deposits calcium on it. Keeping the Langelier Saturation Index near zero protects the finish, which is why balanced chemistry is the cheapest way to extend the years between re-plasters.
