Backwash based on pressure, not the calendar. When the filter's pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 PSI above its clean starting pressure, it's time. Backwashing more often than that wastes water and can reduce filtration, because a slightly dirty sand bed actually traps fine particles better.
No. Cartridge filters are cleaned by removing the element and hosing it off, which uses far less water than backwashing a sand or DE filter. That water savings is one of the main reasons many owners in drought-prone areas choose cartridge systems.
