Common questions
Take the pool footprint plus working room on each side, times the average depth plus base over-dig, to get cubic feet, then convert to cubic yards. A typical 32-by-16-foot pool yields roughly 130 to 160 cubic yards of in-ground soil before swell — more once it's dug loose.
Compacted in the ground, soil is dense; once dug it breaks up and traps air, swelling roughly 25 percent in loose volume. So although you remove a fixed in-ground volume, you must haul away about a quarter more than that. The swell factor is why hauling estimates exceed the raw dig number.
Standard dump trucks carry about 14 cubic yards. Take your loose (swelled) excavation volume and divide by 14, rounding up. A typical residential pool produces around 12 to 15 truckloads of spoil, which is why haul-off is one of the larger early costs in a build.
Yes. The hole must be larger than the pool itself so crews can set forms, place steel, and shoot gunite from outside the shell. Adding about two feet on each side is typical. Skipping it leaves no room to work and forces awkward, slow construction.
